Could Ed Orgeron make a return to college football?

Ed Orgeron etched his name in the history books with a historic 2019 season at LSU, but two years later he was fired and stepped away from coaching all together. Now, it appears, he’s beginning to look into a return to the sport he loves.

The former Tigers head coach joined Barstool Sports’ Pardon My Take to talk about his experiences and his growing passion to get back into the coaching scene.

“I think it’s time,” Orgeron stated, regarding getting back into coaching football. “I’m feeling it a little bit. Haven’t made the decision totally, but I’ve got my boys settled, coaching football now. It’s been four years since I’ve been out. I’m getting the itch again.”

Orgeron has been away from the game for four years and has not taken another coaching job since then. He’s resided in Miami, Florida, often seen at Miami University practices as his sons are on the staff for the Hurricanes. When he initially keft LSU, he was looking forward to the time off and since then he’s seen his kids get their own opportunities and start their lives.

“I didn’t know what was going to happen,” Orgeron said of his retirement. “One of my sons coaches at Miami, so I went down there and Mario Cristobal has been great to me. We asked him if he could get Cody a job as a young analyst and he said yea. Cody asked if I minded moving down there too, and I said I volunteer. So I moved down to Miami Beach and been there ever since. My other son is an analyst at Miami too and my oldest son coaches at Tulane.”

Orgeron has amassed a 67–47 record as a head coach, over the course of his time with LSU, Ole Miss and the interim leader of USC back in 2013. The moments he spent roaming the sidelines with the Tigers is certainly more memorable than anything else.

Moving forward, college football is an obvious fit for Orgeron, but he does have some NFL experience, as well. He was the defensive line coach for the New Orleans Saints back in 2008. Whether he is hellbent on being a head coach or willing to take a position as an assistant is the question many will be asking now.

Time will tell what Ed Orgeron does, and where he pops up next. He’s throwing his fishing pole in the water and looking to see if anyone bites. The 64-year-old is ready to return, but whether a team will have him is the more interesting side of the equation.
