A college boxer in the Philippines died after sustaining a punch “to the nose” during his match, his school announced this week.

Occidental Mindoro State College said in a statement that Marc Mateo Castillo "tragically passed away following his boxing match" on Saturday, April 26.

Castillo was 20 years old.

The school said a referee decided to stop Castillo’s match in the third round, but did not provide details on what led to the decision.

Occidental Mindoro State College said it is working with “the concerned agencies and organizations” in order “to ensure a thorough review of the incident.”

The college said school officials “have personally reached out to Mr. Castillo's family and are extending full assistance in the necessary arrangements for his dignified return home.”

“The OMSC community conveys its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Castillo,” the college’s statement said. “The entire OMSC community shares in this period of mourning and stands in solidarity with those affected by this tragic loss.”

Castillo was rushed to the local Camiguin General Hospital after the match and later transferred to another hospital in Cagayan de Oro City “for further evaluation and treatment” before he was pronounced dead, the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges said in a statement.

The association, which oversaw the boxing competition where Castillo died, said there was “deep sadness” over the “beloved” college athlete’s death.

“It is heartbreaking that despite our meticulous preparation to ensure the utmost safety and welfare of all our student-athletes during the event, this unfortunate and fatal accident happened,” the association said.
