Tuesday notes:
- LONG TIME COMING: This is the third-latest date on which the Cubs ever have hosted a National League opponent for the first time in a season. In 2006, they did not welcome the Rockies until Sept. 29, the final weekend of the season. In 2023, they faced the Phillies at Wrigley Field for the first time on Sept. 27. And it has been 457 days since the Cubs last hosted the Mets at Wrigley Field on June 23, 2024. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)
- MAGIC NUMBER: The Cubs’ magic number to clinch the top wild-card spot over the Padres remained at 4 following the Padres’ win over the Brewers Monday. Thus if the Cubs can go 4-2 in their six remaining games, they’ll host the Wild Card series regardless of what the Padres do. The Cubs do not have the tiebreaker vs. the Padres. The following comes from BCBer onero (and thanks for doing the math!): The Padres have clinched the third tiebreaker, which is intraleague record. They are 65-43. At worst they could finish 65-49. The Cubs’ intraleague record is 58-50, if they win out, 64-50. To win the second tiebreaker, intradivision record, the Cubs would need to sweep the Cardinals in the last 3 games (30-22 vs NL Central) and have SD lose the final 3 games to Arizona (29-23 vs NL West). And if that happens, the Cubs would clinch home field anyway.
- NICO’S FIELDING: Nico Hoerner’s 15 outs above average and 11 Fielding Run Value both lead all NL second basemen and 16 defensive runs saved are the most among major league second basemen, nine ahead of second-place Brice Turang.
- PCA’S FIELDING: Per Baseball Savant, Pete Crow-Armstrong’s 19 outs above average lead all NL outfielders and are the fifth-most in all of major league baseball. His 19 Fielding Run Value is tied for the fourth-highest in the majors, and his 14 defensive runs saved are the most among NL center fielders.
Cubs lineup:
Mets lineup:
Cade Horton, RHP vs. David Peterson, LHP
Cade Horton has been spectacularly good since the All-Star break. In 11 starts over that span he has an ERA of 0.93 and a 0.780 WHIP, with just two home runs allowed in 58.1 innings. He allowed no runs or one run in 10 of those 11 starts.
Horton made his MLB debut against the Mets May 10 in Citi Field, throwing four innings after Brad Keller was an opener. Horton allowed three runs in four innings and threw 77 pitches. I think you’d likely agree that he’s a completely different pitcher now than he was then.
David Peterson is left-handed, and you know the trouble the Cubs have had with lefty starters this year. Peterson’s overall numbers (3.98 ERA, 1.339 WHIP, 3.47 FIP in 29 starts) are pretty good.
But. He has a 7.86 ERA and 1.748 WHIP over his last seven starts, and that ERA is worse over the most recent four: 10.90. Yikes. Let’s hope the Cubs can keep the pounding going.
Today’s game is on Marquee Sports Network. You can find out if Marquee is available via a provider in your area here. It’s also on TBS (outside the Cubs and Mets market territories).
Please visit our SB Nation Mets site Amazin’ Avenue. If you do go there to interact with Mets fans, please be respectful, abide by their individual site rules and serve as a good representation of Cub fans in general and BCB in particular.
The 2025 Game Thread procedure will be identical to last year’s.
You’ll find the game preview posted separately on the front page two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).
At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page, titled “Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of week/date) game threads.” It will contain every post related to that particular game, including the First Pitch Thread and the overflow thread, as well as the recap when it’s published. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post.
You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread and the overflow thread in the box marked “Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). The StoryStream for each game can also be found in that section.
The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at 90 minutes after the scheduled game time.
Discuss amongst yourselves.
