Catching up with former area athletes: Lukas Bennett claims 100-meter crown at North Star championships

DICKINSON, N.D. — Mitchell native Lukas Bennett continued a stellar track campaign for Dakota State University with a strong showing at the North Star Athletic Association track and field championships on May 8-9.

The sophomore sprinter claimed the NSAA title in the men’s 100-meter dash with a time of 10.71 seconds and added runner-up placements at 200 meters (21.47) and 400 meters (48.95). The former Kernels won three NSAA men’s track athlete of the week awards during the spring season.

Bennett and Burke native Ben Witt were also on the Trojans’ winning 4x400-meter relay (3:21.34). Individually, Witt was sixth at 400 meters (49.82) and seventh at 200 meters (22.66).

Elsewhere on the track for the Trojans, Letcher native Joshua Tucker and Parkston product David Brock each placed in the men’s 10,000 meters. Tucker, a sophomore, was sixth in 35:52.38 with Brock, a freshman, in eighth at 39:45.97.

On the women’s side, Lindsey Roth, another Parkston product, came in second in the 1,500-meter run (4:53.66) and was fourth at 5,000 meters (20:00.19). She also ran the anchor leg on the winning 4x800-meter relay.

Burke native Bridget Bartling, a sophomore, took seventh in the women’s 100-meter dash (13.06). Earlier this season at the Drake Relays, Bartling was part of a Trojan quartet that broke an 18-year-old school record in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 48.81 seconds.

Senior Saddie Palmquist, of Howard, finished seventh in the women’s 800-meter run (2:30.54)

In the field, freshman Brock Krueger collected two top finishes for the Trojans, clearing 1.86 meters (6 feet, 1.25 inches) to take fifth in the men’s high jump as well as reaching 12.67 meters (41 feet, 7 inches) for eighth place in the men’s triple jump.

Rounding out DSU’s top placers at the NSAA meet, Mitchell product Lilly Young, a freshman, posted an eighth-place finish in the women’s discus with a heave of 37.34 meters (122 feet, 6 inches).

Boschee nets two top finishes at NSIC meet

DULUTH, Minn. — Sanborn Central product Jeff Boschee notched a pair of podium finishes for the Northern State University squad at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championships hosted May 8-10.

Boschee, a freshman, recorded a leap of 2.02 meters (6 feet, 7.5 inches) to claim fourth place in the men’s high jump and cleared 4.31 meters (14-1.75) in the men’s pole vault, which was good for seventh place. His efforts helped NSU to a third-place finish in the men’s team standings at the meet.

A pair of former area throwers now representing the University of Sioux Falls recorded top-eight finishes. Freshman Tobi Peterson, of Chamberlain, grabbed second place in the women’s shot put at 14.08 meters (46 feet, 2.5 inches), just 1.5 inches behind the winner. Meanwhile, Scotland native Nicole Flynn, a senior, slotted in seventh in the women’s discus with a mark of 43.51 meters (142 feet, 9 inches).

Menno native and Augustana freshman Ashton Massey took sixth place in the women’s heptathlon at the NSIC championships, securing 4,407 total points. Among the heptathletes, Massey finished second in the 800-meter run and fifth in the 100-meter hurdles. Augustana also finished third in the women’s team standings.
