Bryce Underwood’s Michigan roommate during fall camp? None other than a two-time captain

ANN ARBOR – The Michigan Wolverines‘ 2025 season could largely come down to what it gets out of freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood, the presumed starter heading into next week’s opener vs. New Mexico.

Quarterbacks are de facto leaders of the team, so one of Michigan’s top culture-setters – now two-time captain Max Bredeson – decided to personally take him under his wing.

”Bryce and I were roommates for camp,” Bredson told the Michigan media on Thursday. “And that was fun. A lot of great things, like obviously getting to see him play football. It’s cool to see that stuff. But like the way he talks to people, the way he interacts in the building, I think that’s really special.

“I got to be around him every day for a month straight and like get to see what someone’s really like after they come back and you go back to a hotel room after three-hour practice, you can see the real version of them. The real version is as good as could be.”

Bredeson asked Underwood if he would be interested in rooming with him for the month of camp before bringing the idea to Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore, who signed off on it.

”I asked and said that I think that we should be roommates, and he was all for it,” Bredeson said. “I asked Coach Moore, and he said that was a great idea… I don’t know exactly what I was trying to get out of it, but I just knew like it could help the team being around each other every day.

“Everybody wants to have a positive impact on everybody. So I got a lot out of it from him, too. So it wasn’t all about me trying to be around him. A lot of good things came for me from being around him, too.”

Bredeson was impressed by Underwood’s ability to adapt to the Michigan locker room as a freshman and how he has grown into his role on the team.

”I know when I was a freshman, it would be hard for me to say stuff,” Bredeson revealed. “He’s definitely able to grow in that role and kind of settle in. Every quarterback has to be able to talk to the offense. It doesn’t matter how old you are. And you’ve got to be like around those great quarterbacks who are in the room that have done that a lot. So I think that was definitely big for him.”
