Broncos DPOY Patrick Surtain II helped off field with apparent non-contact lower-leg injury vs. Colts

All-Pro Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II left Sunday's game against the Indianapolis Colts with an apparent lower-leg injury.

Surtain suffered the injury midway through the second quarter. He fell to the turf after shadowing Colts receiver Michael Pittman on an out route in the flat and appeared to sustain the injury without contact. He immediately clutched his lower left leg as he sat on the turf.

Trainers tended to Surtain on the field. Surtain eventually needed the help of trainers to leave the field for the Broncos locker room.

The nature of his injury wasn't immediately clear.

The injury is cause for significant concern for an elite Broncos defense that projects this season among the league's best. Surtain is a two-time All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowler and is the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year. He's the anchor of Denver's secondary.

If Surtain does miss time, Riley Moss would be elevated to No. 1 cornerback duty for the Broncos. First-round rookie cornerback Jahdae Barron could be asked to take on a larger role after starting the season in a backup role.
