Terence Crawford's brilliant boxing masterclass against Canelo Alvarez led a loaded fight weekend that saw some significant movement in the divisional rankings.
Crawford officially left his top spot at 154 pounds behind to become the new king of the super middleweights after putting together one of his finest performances in a unanimous decision victory against Canelo on Saturday in las Vegas. The win vaults Crawford to the top spot at 168 pounds and Canelo drops to No. 2.
On the undercard, Lester Martinez earned a place in the super middleweight rankings after battling WBC interim champion Christian Mbilli to a split draw. The entertaining slugfest appeared to be in favor of Martinez, who demonstrated a durable chin and impressive cardio, but he had to settle for the draw. Mbilli fought well early but faded in the later rounds with a hard charging approach hoppint that would break Martinez down in the second half of the fight. Martinez vaults into the No. 6 slot while Mbilli falls three spots to No. 5 despite retaining his interim belt.
Early Sunday morning in Nagoya, Japan, another pound-for-pound fighter, Naoya Inoue, relied on his intelligence rather than raw power to dominate Murodjon Akhmadliev to retain his undisputed junior featherweight status by unanimous decision. Inoue solidifies the top spot at junior featherweight while Akhmadliev holds his place at No. 3 despite the routing.
In the bantamweight division, Christian Medina blew through Yoshiki Takei to score a fourth-round TKO on the Inoue-Akhmadliev co-main event, to win the WBO world title. It was a stunning performance as Medina wasted little time imposing his will, dropping Takei in the first round and finishing the job with a brutal assault of punches in Round 4. Medina debuts in the rankings at No. 3 while Takei suffers the first loss of his pro career and falls to No. 4.
ESPN's divisional boxing rankings highlight the best in the sport in every weight class. Rankings will change based on recent results and performances. Fighters who have announced they are moving to a different weight class will be ranked in that new division, if warranted, only once they fight in that weight class. Fighters who currently own titles in two divisions can be ranked in both.
Fighters who haven't competed in the past 12 months -- and don't have a fight scheduled -- will be dropped from the rankings until they fight again. Any fighter who tests positive for a performance-enhancing substance will also be removed. That boxer will be eligible to reenter the rankings after his next bout.
