In what was a chaotic week for the Chicago Bears with the change they made firing Shane Waldron and promoting Thomas Brown to offensive coordinator, not all rumors coming out of the locker room were true. During the week there was a report that anonymous veteran players had brought up the idea of the team benching rookie quarterback Caleb Williams in favor of second-year starter Tyson Bagent.
That rumor had no legs or credibility according to a report from NFL Network. NFL Insider Ian Rapoport went into great detail about the Bears coaching change, what Brown will bring to the offense, and the rumors surrounding a potential Williams benching.
According to Rapoport, the Bears never gave consideration to benching Williams, but rather, it was pondered before the firing of Waldron what giving him a break for a couple weeks could do for the rookie. Similar tactics have been done in Carolina with Bryce Young and Indianapolis with Anthony Richardson this season, yet the team decided to stick by their young quarterback.
“Instead, as sources explained, the possibility of starting Tyson Bagent over Williams was brought up in a broader context during a meeting with team brass and several of the team's leaders prior to Tuesday's firing of OC Shane Waldron. The idea would have been to give Williams a break for a few games, similar to what the Panthers did with Bryce Young (the 2023 No. 1 overall pick) earlier this season.”
The Bears are sticking with Caleb Williams, although head coach Matt Eberflus said this week that the process will be week-to-week, there was never true consideration to turn to Tyson Bagent ahead of the rivalry game against the Green Bay Packers.
