For the first time since the 90s, the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs will not be Gregg Popovich.
On Friday, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the 76-year-old Popovich will transition away from the role of head coach and will be become the team president.
A member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, Popovich holds the NBA’s all-time record for regular-season wins with 1,422. Popovich won five NBA titles during his time as coach and was named Coach of the Year three times.
Popovich has faced health problems in recent years. He suffered a mild stroke in November and second stroke in February. After the second incident, Popovich stepped away from the team for the rest of the season.
Popovich has been with the Spurs since 1994. He started as the general manager of the team. Early in the 1996-97 season, Popovich fired Bob Hill and installed himself as head coach.
