ASK IRA: Can there be a Heat postseason statement until Pat Riley speaks?

Q: You said that Pat Riley is not talking this week. After a season this bad, isn’t he the voice we need to hear? Should someone tell him he has to say something? All Erik Spoelstra says is how much he likes his players, which is what I would expect from any coach. – Randy.

A: It was interesting, because on Wednesday we were told Pat Riley is not speaking this week as the team gets more clarity on its situation. Considering the Heat are not in the lottery, I’m not sure how much clarity could come in incoming days, or even coming weeks. However, remember that once teams are eliminated from the playoffs, they are eligible to make trades. So perhaps, although doubtful, the Heat are on the clock? Hmm. Nah. Or it could be as simple as, with the Heat’s limited assets, that there simply is not much to say regarding personnel at the moment.

Q: Tyler Herro already is raising his price tag? – Allan.

A: No, what Tyler Herro said when asked about his extension window is that he can do a deal in October, when that window opens, but that he also can do a longer deal starting next summer. So yes, he said the price would go up, but that is a factor of timing, more than any type of negotiation statement. There will be plenty of time in the interim for the Heat to figure out both a price point, and the long-term vision with Tyler. At this stage, Tyler appears all in for an extended run, if offered, with the Heat.

Q; What stood out to you most about Wednesday’s interviews? I thought it was handled well.  – Pete.

A: To me, it was three who declined interviews, which totally was their right during the optional media session. But it also just happens that Andrew Wiggins, Duncan Robinson, and Terry Rozier also will be among the most significant Heat decisions this offseason. Again, is Andrew Wiggins a contract to be dangled in a trade or a component going forward? Will the Heat pick up the guarantee on Duncan Robinson‘s full contract? And what will happen going forward to Terry Rozier after his struggles this past season? Not sure any of the three could’ve had much to say until they hear from what Heat management has to say.
