Ashlyn Koupal, Wagner outduel Reagan Rus, MVP for seventh place at Class A girls basketball

SPEARFISH, S.D. — A big outing from Ashlyn Koupal carried Wagner past Mount Vernon/Plankinton 59-47 in the Class A girls basketball tournament seventh-place game on Saturday afternoon.

The sixth-seeded Red Raiders roared out to a 34-7 halftime lead and largely cruised from there. No. 8 seed MVP outscored Wagner 40-23 after halftime on the strength of a 19-8 third quarter, but never pulled closer than nine points.

Koupal finished just shy of a triple-double with 33 points, 10 rebounds and nine blocked shots to go with three assists and one steal to lead the Red Raiders, while Lydia Yost tacked on 16 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Braxton Nedved chipped in six points, as Wagner ended its season with a 18-7 record.

Reagan Rus countered with 20 points, nine rebounds, five assists, two steals and one block for the Titans. Alyssa Johnson notched eight points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals, and Madalynn Lorang and Taryn Hegg each had seven points. MVP finished with a mark 19-7.
