800,000 people take park in Mexico City's Pride parade

Around 800,000 people took part in this year's Pride parade in Mexico City.

The city administration said on Sunday that this was "a historic turnout" for the LGBTQI+ community's celebrations.

On Saturday afternoon, participants marched through the centre of the city for several hours. They demonstrated against discrimination, social exclusion and violence based on sexual orientation.

It was the 47th annual parade in Mexico City, this time under the motto "Diversity without Borders, Justice, Resistance and Unity."

The English abbreviation LGBTQI+ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex people – and the plus sign is a placeholder for other identities and genders.

In 2024 Mexico was the second most dangerous country for this community in Latin America after Colombia, according to a report by the Network Without Violence LGBTI.

With 80 cases, fatal acts of violence in Mexico rose by 23% year-on-year. The report says that at least one LGBTQI+ person is murdered every 24 hours in Latin America and the Caribbean.
