The 2025 season is already starting to look eerily similar to 2024 for the San Francisco 49ers.
Last year, the 49ers saw countless stars either sidelined by season-ending injuries or slowed by nagging ailments throughout the season.
Christian McCaffrey didn’t play until Week 9 and appeared in only four games. Running back Elijah Mitchell missed the entire season with a hamstring injury. In the wide receiver room, Brandon Aiyuk tore his ACL seven games in, Jauan Jennings missed two games with a hip injury, and Ricky Pearsall was recovering from a gunshot wound. Add in missed time for Trent Williams, Nick Bosa, Javon Hargrave, Kevin Givens, Dre Greenlaw, and several others, and it was a rough year in San Francisco.

Now, the 49ers are once again beginning the season banged-up. They head into a Week 2 matchup against the New Orleans Saints down their starting quarterback, tight end and multiple wide receivers.
Here's a look at the 49ers' current injury report, including the latest on Brock Purdy, George Kittle and more.

The most significant injury for the 49ers is to their franchise quarterback, Brock Purdy. He’s expected to miss several games due to a turf toe-related ailment, forcing the team to turn to Mac Jones to run the offense for the time being. Jones was listed with a knee injury at practice this week but remained a full participant.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan initially called Purdy a “long shot” to play in the team’s Week 2 matchup against New Orleans, but the latest reports suggest he could be sidelined through Week 6.
At a minimum, Purdy is expected to miss Weeks 2 and 3. He was one of the few 49ers stars to avoid major injuries in 2024, but that won’t be the case in 2025.
George Kittle
The 49ers placed Kittle, their star tight end, on injured reserve after Week 1. Kittle had been ruled out of that game due to a hamstring injury, leaving in the second quarter.
Kittle will miss at least the next four games with his hamstring injury. Like Purdy, the tight end wasn't one of the injury-prone stars in 2024, but he now finds himself on IR just two weeks into the new season.

Jauan Jennings
Jennings is dealing with a shoulder injury. He did play in Week 1, but did not practice on Wednesday or Thursday for Week 2. He returned on Friday.
The wide receiver recently settled a contract dispute with the team by adding incentives to his current deal, but his status has been up in the air for Week 2. Per Adam Schefter, Jennings had scans on his shoulder that came back clean, so he did avoid major injury, but he's still considered "day to day."
Jennings did, however, participate in some conditioning with trainers at Thursday's practice. Whether he can play in Week 2 or not, Jennings is expected to be fine in the short-term, and he'll be needed for a wide receiver room that's had tons of injuries.
Christian McCaffrey
Initially, it felt like déjà vu when Christian McCaffrey appeared on the 49ers’ Week 1 injury report with a calf issue. Last season, he was expected to be healthy heading into Week 1, but Achilles problems in both legs gradually became more serious, and he didn’t make his debut until late in the year.
This time, however, McCaffrey did play in Week 1, totaling 142 yards from scrimmage. There’s little cause for concern despite his absence from Wednesday’s practice. The running back was a full participant in Thursday’s session, listed with a calf ailment but sitting out only for rest purposes.
For now, McCaffrey is expected to continue playing, though his injury history makes the calf issue one to monitor closely.

Yetur Gross-Matos
Another of the more significant names on the 49ers' injury report this week is Gross-Matos, who is dealing with a knee injury. He did not participate in practice on Wednesday, then was limited on Thursday.
Gross-Matos totaled four sacks last season for San Francisco.
Trent Williams
Williams, 37, is mostly being afforded extra rest as a veteran for the 49ers.
While the team listed him as having a knee ailment, it also specified that his absences from practice on Wednesday and Thursday were primarily for rest. Williams did play in Week 1.

Brandon Aiyuk
Aiyuk still isn't technically on the 49ers' injury report because he's on the reserve/PUP list as he recovers from last season's torn ACL. Shanahan has said that the team is eyeing a Week 6 return for Aiyuk.
His return will eventually be a welcome one for San Francisco; other wide receivers to go down with injuries recently include Jacob Cowing (IR, hamstring) and Jordan Watkins (limited at practice, ankle).
Other players on injured reserve for the 49ers include DT Kevin Givens, CB Jakob Robinson, RB Patrick Taylor Jr., DE Tarron Jackson, WR Trent Taylor and CB Tre Tomlinson. Additionally, S Malik Mustapha is on the reserve/PUP list.
What is Brock Purdy's injury?
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Purdy's injury has been described as a "turf toe variant."
The injury occurred during San Francisco's Week 1 win over Seattle, a game in which Purdy also injured his left shoulder. Despite the injuries, Purdy played through both and finished the game. Here's a look at the play where Purdy is believed to have injured his toe:
According to Kyle Shanahan, here's the play where #49ers QB Brock Purdy hurt his toe. Looks fairly innocuous in real time and can see why Purdy kept playing through it. Shanahan stopped short of calling it turf toe but indicated it's similar concept. pic.twitter.com/M7mgnrgFqr
— Nick Wagoner (@nwagoner) September 10, 2025When will Brock Purdy return?
Per Rapoport, Purdy could miss anywhere from two-to-five weeks of the season.
That wide timeline likely indicated that Purdy's recovery will depend on how his turf toe heals during treatment; however, he should be expected to be out until at least Week 4.

What is George Kittle's injury?
Kittle is dealing with a hamstring injury, per Schefter. The exact extent of the injury is unknown, but it's set to keep the star tight end out multiple weeks.
Here's a look at the blocking play where Kittle is believed to have injured his hamstring:

When will George Kittle return?
Kittle will not be eligible to return until Week 6, a road matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It's not guaranteed that he'll be ready to return then, but being placed on IR means Kittle must miss the next four games.
Rapoport reported that Kittle's timeline is viewed as 3-to-5 weeks, which is why he became a candidate for IR.

— Kyle Posey (@KP_Show) September 8, 2025Jennings does have a chance to play in Week 2, despite not practicing on Wednesday or Thursday. He did return to practice on Friday, and Jennings also reportedly was cleared of any long-term injuries after tests following Week 1.
