The Toledo Rockets (2-1) had no issue against the Morgan State Bears (0-3) on Saturday, riding the momentum of a 43-point second quarter en route to a 60-0 victory.
The visiting Bears were feisty at game’s start, limiting Toledo to a field goal on their first possession, then holding the Rockets to just 26 yards of offense on their next two possessions to keep the score at 3-0 with 1:21 remaining in the first quarter.
Morgan State couldn’t take advantage of a prone Rockets team, however, punting the ball back at the start of the second quarter and allowing Tucker Gleason to find Junior Vandeross III for an 12-yard touchdown connection to give Toledo a 9-0 lead. Jason Candle opted for an aggressive approach, opting for the two-point conversion, and Connor Jones would convert on the ground, putting the tally at 11-0 with 14:08 to go in the second quarter.
It all fell apart from there for the visitors, as Bears receiver Justin Perry fumbled a catch early on the next drive which was ultimately recovered by Toledo’s Carlos Hazelwood. Chip Trayanum cashed the turnover in for his third rushing score of the season, starting an unbelievable run for the hosting side.
By the end of the second frame, Toledo would accumulate six touchdowns, with Vandeross, Trayanum and Kenji Christian all scoring twice to put the halftime score at 46-0. CC Ezirim’s short touchdown catch in the third quarter and Kalieb Osborne’s touchdown run in the fourth completed the scoring account.
MSU would never be seriously competitive again after the fumble, with their final 10 possessions ending with nine punts— four-straight of which were of the three-and-out variety in the second quarter— and a half-end.
Tucker Gleason, like many starters, was benched for health late in the second quarter, finshing the day 13-of-17 for 174 yards and a touchdown. John Alan Ricter played in relief and posted a 10-of-14 passing mark for 93 yards and two touchdowns. Kalieb Osborne saw mop-up duty and was 4-of-6 for 30 yards and a rushing score.
Osborne also tied for the team lead in net yards (49) and was second on the team in carries (seven.) Chip Trayanum toted the ball team-leading 11 times for 44 yards and two touchdowns, while Willie Shaw had 49 yards on eight carries. Kenji Christian had 43 yards and two touchdowns in his Rockets debut after transferring in from North Carolina A&T.
Junior Vandeross III hauled in both recieving scores to go along with a team-leading six catches for 45 yards. Javon Brown led the Rockets with 94 yards on five catches. On the day, 14 different Rockets had at least one reception.
K’Von Sherman led Toledo’s defense with nine total tackles, four tackles-for-loss and a sack. Fellow backer Jeremiah Peters had six tackles, including two TFLs and a sack. Five different Rockets had a TFL.
Morgan State completed nine total passes for 18 yards, with three different rushers combining for 51 yards on 21 carries. The Bears had two double-digit tacklers in Hiroshi Carr (10 tackles, TFL) and Josiah Blake (10 tackles, half-TFL.) Lance Byndon had the team’s lone sack, while Jadon Carter forced a fumble.
Toledo will face their first conference opponent of the 2025 campaign next weekend, taking on the Western Michigan Broncos in Kalamazoo. Kickoff is scheduled for next Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Eastern time, with coverage on ESPN+.
